The WAEC results are out and you want to check your WAEC results but you don’t know how to go about it. This article will show you exactly how you can check your WAEC results online.
First of all, you need to know about WAEC. West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is an examination board established by law to determine the examinations required in the public interest in English-speaking West African countries.
Currently, WAEC conducts and awards certificates to students in Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and the Gambia.
If you are reading this article, then it means you are in one of these countries.
WAEC Results Overview (For School Authorities)
The West African Examinations Council does not issue duplicate certificates. The Council, however, issues certified Statement of Results which are as valid as the certificates. The certified Statement of Results are, however, NOT issued to individual candidates or persons but rather directly to any of the following authorities only:
- Institutions of Higher Learning
- Public Bodies
- Prospective Employers (Public/Private)
Requirements
- Persons requiring the Council to forward their results to any Organization/Institution must provide the following details:
- His/her name (in full as used in the examination)
- The name, month and year of the examination whose results are required by the person
- The index number(s) used in the examination(s)
- In addition, the person must forward two of his/her passport-size photographs to the WAEC office where the request for the statement is made.
The passport-size photographs should be endorsed at the back by any one of the following persons who must also guarantee that the applicant is the bonafide candidate who wrote the examination:
- Head of applicant’s present/former school
- Head of a recognized educational institution
- A senior officer of the security services not below the rank of Major/Superintendent or its equivalent
- A senior public servant (Principal Executive Officer and above)
- A qualified registered medical practitioner (herbalists are not acceptable)
- A barrister/solicitor
Fee for Confirmation/Verification of Results and Related Services
Requests by individuals/organizations/institutions for statements to be issued to organizations/institutions in Ghana or outside Ghana
- Issuing of the confirmed statement of results to local/foreign destinations GH¢100.00 per statement per examination (exclusive of courier/delivery services)
- Bulk confirmation of results – GH¢50.00 per statement per examination
- Bulk Verification of results – GH¢50.00 per document
- On-line verification of results for tertiary institutions and organisations – GH¢7.00 per result per candidate
- Verification of results/identity – GH¢100.00 per document
- Establishment of equivalence/interpretation of statement of results – GH¢125.00 per statement
These fees are revised from time to time and do not include courier/delivery services. All payments must be made in cash at the nearest WAEC Office or by bank draft made payable to the “West African Examinations Council” written out in full.
Payment may also be made using VISA card. Any application which is not accompanied by all the requirements will not be processed.
Application Form
Application forms may be collected from the Records and Aptitude Tests Department of the Council’s Office at Accra OR any WAEC Branch Office in Ghana or downloaded at www.waecgh.org
Verification of Results
Verification of Results is NOT available to individual applicants but to organizations and institutions who want to authenticate the examination results of their prospective students and or/employees.
They are required to submit photocopies of the documents presented by the student (s)/ employee (s) to the Council. Verification can also be done online by tertiary institutions at www.waecgh.org.
The online service fee is GH¢7.00 per result per candidate.
Attestation of Results
The West African Examinations Council does not issue duplicate certificates.
The Council, however, now issues Attestation of Results which are as valid as the certificate. Users who wish could confirm the details on the document with the Council.
Attestation of Results are issued to individual candidates or persons for their possession. The Attestation must be collected personally by applicants from the offices of the Council in Accra or the regions. For the issuance of the Attestation, applicants will be required to provide the following details:
- Your Name (in full as used in the examination)
- The Name, Month and Year of Examination
- Your Index Number
- Passport photograph.
- A valid identification document.
- GH¢350.00
Establishment of Equivalence
The Council also establishes equivalences and interprets certificates from different examining bodies that it has information on.

NB: Students reading the WAEC Results Overview above may not have to concern themselves with it as the schools you have registered with will sort out the prerequisites.
WAEC Results
After all written papers have been marked, WAEC announces the release of results. Most countries receive their results at the end of the second half of the year. Each student is required to check his/her own results online and print it out for application to Senior High Schools and Tertiary Institutions.
Types of WAEC Results
BECE – Basic Education Certificate Examination
Introduction
This examination is both for certification and selection into Senior High Schools and Technical Institutes in Ghana. The results of the examination is based on Continuous Assessment and external examination. The Continuous Assessment forms 30% whilst the external examination forms 70% of the total assessment.
Eligibility
Candidates in the third year of Junior High Schools approved by the Ghana Education Service are eligible to register to take part in this examination.
Date of Examination
The examination is conducted nationwide in June each year.
Entry for the Examination
Registration for the examination is done electronically in October/November each year. Statement of Entries, CDs together with the registration fees should reach the appropriate Office of the Council by specified dates that will be determined by the Council from year to year.
Subjects for the Examination
The following are the subjects available to candidates:
- English Language
- Ghanaian Language and Culture
- Social Studies
- Integrated Science
- Mathematics
- Basic Design and Technology
- Religious & Moral Education
- Information and Communications Technology
- French (optional)
Grading of Candidates
Candidates are graded based on their performance in the external examination (objective and written) and Continuous (Internal) Assessment marks provided by the schools. A nine-point numerical scale is used in grading the candidates with Grade 1 denoting the highest performance and Grade 9 the lowest.
Release of Results
The results of the examination are released in August to enable successful and qualified candidates to enter Senior High Schools and Technical Institutes at the beginning of the academic year. However, ever since the pandemic lockdown which started in 2020, the release of examination results has been delayed to ending of the year and sometimes January.
The results lists are sent to the participating schools, whilst each candidate receives a statement of results through his/her school. Candidates can also check their results online with an access card at www.waecgh.org.
How To Check BECE Results Online
Purchase a BECE result checker card via www.checkercards.com and proceed to the result checking portal at https://eresults.waecgh.org. On the results checker portal, type in your Index Number, re-enter your Index Number to confirm it is correct, select Examination type (e.g BECE School), select the year of Examination (e.g 2022), type in the Serial number (e.g 180000000001) and type in the Pin (e.g A1B2C3D4E5F9) from the Bece Results Checker Card you bought > Submit and wait for the popup window to display your results.
Selection of Candidates to Senior High School
Candidates are selected to Senior High Schools by the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).
Review of Scripts
Scripts are kept for three months after release of results before they are finally destroyed. During this time, review of scripts for a fee is allowed and this is done at the instance of the Head of school or an accredited representative of the school since the Basic Education Certificate Examination is a school-based examination. The Council by policy does not undertake review of scripts at the instance of candidates, parents, guardians, or persons claiming to act “in loco parentis”
Certificates
Certificates are sent to the schools for collection by individual candidates. Certificates are produced once, and so certificates which get lost or damaged after collection are not replaced.
Confirmation of Results
Candidates who lose their certificates may confirm their results to prospective employers and educational institutions
Attestation of Results
Candidates who lose their certificates may also request attestation of their results.

WASSCE – West African Senior School Certificate Examination
Introduction
The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is administered to school candidates in the third year of Senior High School and to private candidates. The examination is for both selections to tertiary institutions and for certification.
Dates of the Examination
The examination is conducted twice a year – May / June for school candidates only and in September / October for private candidates.
Entry Procedure
School Candidates
The entry period is from September to November and it lasts for six weeks. School authorities are expected to register their candidates and upload their entry data online. Continuous Assessment Scores are however received from the schools on CDs. Other details of the entry procedure are provided in Notes for the Guidance of Schools which are supplied together with the entry documents. The completed entry documents, together with evidence of payment of registration fees at a designated bank are expected to be submitted to the Council’s Office located in the region of the school.
Private Candidates
The entry period is from February to May. Registration is strictly online for private candidates. Candidates can obtain more information on how to register for the examination at www.waecgh.org
